Sonic the Hedgehog is an traditionally/computer-animated television series created by Greg Weisman and Rebecca Sugar. It is based on the fictional character of the same name. It is a reimagining of the Archie comics and the original Saturday morning Sonic cartoon (known to fans as Sonic SatAM). The series follows Sonic and the Freedom Fighters in an all-out war against Doctor Robotnik for the sake of the planet Mobius. The series aired for 5 seasons from 2016 to 2020 on Cartoon Network (moved to Disney XD in Season 4) and Adult Swim (from 2016 until 2019 due to being more of a kid's cartoon than an Adult Swim action comedy) programming and is very popular among fans.

Overview[]

In a futuristic Earth known as Mobius, the evil Dr. Robotnik has taken over most of the planet, pitting humans into a war with creatures called Mobians. During this time, Sonic the Hedgehog constantly battles the wretched dictator with only his best friend Tails by his side. Eventually, Princess Sally Acorn of the Knothole Freedom Fighters recruits them both to join her team of rebels. During the team's new adventures, they meet new friends, battle new foes, search for the Chaos Emeralds, learn about the history of the planet, and assemble more teams to take down the army of Robotropolis for good. The series ends with the Freedom Fighters celebrating their victory and looking forward to the future.

Episode List[]

Trivia[]

  • This is the first and only non-anime Adult Swim series to be based on a video game franchise.
    • Surprisingly, it is much more light-hearted compared to Adult's Swim's series with a rating of TV-PG and it aired on Adult Swim until they wanted to air on CN because of the popularity of Steven Universe.
    • However, when it moved to Cartoon Network (Disney XD and sometimes Disney Channel on Disney XD in Season 4), it was related TV-Y7-FV (for most episodes) while some are rated TV-PG as mentioned above.
    • Similar to Airline Launch, it also airs on Disney XD thus making the second Warner Animation Group television series to do so.
  • This is the first and only Adult Swim television series to be made by Greg Weisman and Rebecca Sugar as they felt that is much more lighter and softer than almost of all of Adult Swim's programming.
  • King Acorn in this series is voiced by J.K. Simmons who uses his Mayor Leodore Lionheart voice from the Walt Disney Animation Studios' 2016 film Zootopia
  • Most of this was based on the Post-SGW Archie comics Universe with Sally appearing in her new outfit.
  • In this series, the name "Eggman" is used (usually by Sonic) as an insult to Doctor Robotnik.
  • Amy Rose's personality is similar to her counterpart from the Fleetway comics and her maturity is similar to her counterpart from the Fleetway (75%) and Archie comics (25%).
  • Manic, Sonia, and Muttski are introduced sometime in season 2.
  • Antoine and Bunnie get married near the end of the series.
  • Each season has a different story arc.
  • In this series, Mighty the Armadillo is voiced by Jesse McCartney who also voices Roxas and Ventus from the Kingdom Hearts series and as well as Dick Grayson/Robin/Nightwing from Young Justice.
    • In addition, he also uses his Roxas voice in this series.
    • The relationship between him and Honey in this series is similar to Roxas and Xion's relationship.
  • This series had a tone that is somewhere between the serious and the light nature such as Young Justice, some LEGO video games like the LEGO Star Wars series and Steven Universe.
  • Shadow has a vigilante-type role in the series, similar to characters like Batman and the Punisher.
    • However, this is not the first time Johnny Yong Bosch voiced an anthromorphic animal before and the first time was Artemis in the Viz/Studiopolis English dub of the Sailor Moon series.
  • The series tries to stay as true to the video games as possible.
  • The show's main theme song is a cover of The Fastest Thing Alive by Estelle who voices Lupe Wolf as well as Garnet from Steven Universe.
  • Big the Cat is more competent in this series. Also, his relationship with Cream is similar to the relationship between Rocket Raccoon and Groot.
  • Sonic and Manic are voiced by Josh Keaton and Drake Bell, who have both voiced Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
