Kathy Bates (born Kathleen Doyle Bates June 28, 1948) is an American actress and director. Known for her roles in comedic and dramatic film and television having studied theater at Southern Methodist University in Memphis, Tennessee before moving to New York City to pursue an acting career, where Taking Off (1971) was her first on screen role.
